SECTION 4: First-Aid Measures
- Eye Contact: Immediately flush eyes with plenty of clean water for at least 15 minutes, lifting upper and lower eyelids. Remove contact lenses if present. Seek immediate medical attention.
- Skin Contact: Immediately remove contaminated clothing. Wash affected skin thoroughly with soap and water for at least 15 minutes. Get medical assistance if irritation persists.
- Inhalation: Move exposed person to fresh air immediately. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, administer oxygen by trained personnel. Seek medical help.
- Ingestion: Rinse mouth with water. Do NOT induce vomiting unless directed by medical personnel. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Seek urgent medical advice.
SECTION 5: Fire-Fighting Measures
Suitable Extinguishing Media: Water spray, alcohol-resistant foam, dry chemical powder, carbon dioxide (CO2).
Specific Hazards Arising from Chemical: In case of fire, hazardous decomposition products may be formed: Oxides of carbon, acidic fumes.
Protective Equipment for Firefighters: Wear self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) with full protective facepiece and chemical protective suit.
SECTION 6: Accidental Release Measures
Personal Precautions: Use personal protective equipment (goggles, gloves, respirator, safety shoes). Avoid breathing vapors or mists. Ensure adequate ventilation.
Environmental Precautions: Prevent material from entering drains, sewers, surface water, or groundwater systems.
Clean-Up Methods: Neutralize carefully if acidic/alkaline. Soak up with inert absorbent material (sand, silica gel, acid binder). Transfer into clean, suitable containers for disposal.
SECTION 7: Handling and Storage
Safe Handling Precautions: Avoid contact with eyes, skin, and clothing. Avoid inhalation of vapor or mist. Use only under adequate ventilation. Wash thoroughly after handling.
Storage Conditions: Store in original, tightly closed HDPE drums or IBC totes. Keep in a cool, dry, well-ventilated location away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and incompatible substances.
SECTION 8: Exposure Controls / Personal Protection
Engineering Controls: Use process enclosures, local exhaust ventilation, or other engineering controls to keep airborne levels below recommended exposure limits.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):
- Eye/Face Protection: Tightly fitting safety goggles and full face shield.
- Skin/Body Protection: Chemical-resistant Neoprene or Nitrile gloves, safety apron, and rubber boots.
- Respiratory Protection: NIOSH-approved organic vapor / acid gas respirator if aerosol or mists are generated.
SECTION 9: Physical & Chemical Properties
| Physical State & Appearance: | Clear dark brown to amber liquid |
| Odor: | Slight acidic odor |
| pH: | < 2.0 (100%) |
| Specific Gravity (20°C): | 1.18 - 1.25 g/cm³ |
| Solubility in Water: | Soluble in water |
| Boiling Point: | > 102°C |
| Flash Point: | Not applicable |
SECTION 10: Stability and Reactivity
Chemical Stability: Stable under recommended storage conditions.
Possibility of Hazardous Reactions: Exothermic reaction when exposed to strong bases, strong oxidizing agents, or reactive metals.
Conditions to Avoid: Direct sunlight, freezing, excessive heat, contact with incompatible materials.
Incompatible Materials: Strong oxidizing agents, strong bases, active metals (aluminum, zinc, steel).
Hazardous Decomposition Products: Oxides of carbon, acidic fumes.
SECTION 11: Toxicological Information
Acute Toxicity: Oral LD50 (Rat): > 2,000 mg/kg; Dermal LD50 (Rabbit): > 2,000 mg/kg.
Skin Contact: Severe irritation or chemical burns depending on exposure length.
Eye Contact: Risk of serious eye damage, permanent corneal opacity if untreated.
Carcinogenicity: Not listed as carcinogen by IARC, NTP, OSHA, or ACGIH.
SECTION 12: Ecological Information
Ecotoxicity: Toxic to aquatic organisms at high concentration. LC50 (Fish, 96h): > 100 mg/L.
Persistence & Degradability: Biodegradable over time under industrial wastewater treatment conditions.
Bioaccumulative Potential: Low potential for bioaccumulation due to high water solubility.
SECTION 13: Disposal Considerations
